1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as you already do.”
I have been at training camp in Gainesville, Georgia only for 8 complete days. During that time, I have learned and grown spiritually, mentally and relationally faster than I have ever before. In a community of Jesus-loving, Gospel-sharing and adventure-seeking individuals, I have found a home. Yet, settling into this new home is not always easy.
“No isolating yourself.” Luke, one of my new friends, advised as he waggled his finger comically at me. Though using that silly gesture, he was being serious.
I have savored so many moments here so far but there have been others making me want to step back, run and hide. During worship, the Lord might uncover an inner struggle, causing me to want to curl up inside myself. During prayer, the Holy Spirit may enliven an ongoing hope that I wouldn’t think others would care to hear about. During dinner time, my teammates may surface a buried irritation that I have never considered sharing aloud.
“I’m here for you, to listen, to pray.” Luke continued after confronting my tendency to retreat away alone. Other squad mates have come up to me with a similar offer to listen and to pray. I have also received so many hugs and given so many away.
Evidently, my internal conflicts are important to the others in this community. There is no reason to hide and every reason to show up. I am learning to rely on my community as I allow them to trust in me.
How do y’all display 1 Thessalonians 5:11 in your community?
Thank you for praying for me to make good connections with my squad mates! God is answering that prayer every day!
Please pray for:
- Energy and strength to remain in community during this time of learning and growing.
